Do you want to study at a university in Canada or the United States?
If you want to study in the United States or Canada, the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is the best option. It is an exam recognized by most universities, and the online version (iBT) is the most popular. In order for you to achieve a rating that truly demonstrates your level, be sure to familiarize yourself with how it works. Universities almost always ask for a score above 550 on the paper exam and above 80 on the iBT.
Do you want to work or study in England, Australia, or New Zealand?
If you go to England, the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is your best option. This exam includes oral and written comprehension and expression tests, with a choice between Academic and General training for the Reading and Writing section.
If your goal is to study at a university, then go for the Academic approach. If your intention is to live or work abroad, then the General approach is the best option.
There is no minimum score to pass the IELTS: participants are given an overall score from 1 (very poor) to 9 (expert), as well as a score for each section. The IELTS is a very popular test among students who just want to know their level of English.
Do you want to work for an international company?
The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is the exam to prepare for, par excellence. It is a test recognized by corporations around the world to measure the level of English of their employees.
There are two models of the TOEIC test: one focused on reading and listening comprehension, and the other on oral and written expression. In addition to these two models, some companies purchase a license to use a customized version of the TOEIC as an internal test.
If you are looking for a job where you can put your English skills to work, this is the best exam.
Do you want a business career?
The Cambridge English: Business Certificates (BEC) suite consists of three exams. Each exam is aimed at a different level, its content is based on everyday work and business tasks, and it is designed to develop your English skills in the business world:
- With B1 Business Preliminary you demonstrate to companies that you have a level of English that is required for practical and daily use in the business environment.
- With B2 Business Vantage you show companies that you are ready to work internationally. This exam gives you an advantage when it comes to getting a job, a promotion, or developing your professional career.
- With C1 Business Higher you show companies that you have reached an advanced level in business English.
*Unlike TOEFL and TOEIC, the BEC requires a minimum score to pass the exam and obtain the certificate.
